Lavender, Poppy and Peony Class Blog - Friday 11th September 2026

 

Happy Friday, everybody! We hope you have had a great week. We have been busy in KS1 looking at the traditional tale of the Goldilocks and the Three Bears in English as well as learning about the points of a compass in Geography.

Forest School

Forest School sessions will be starting from next week.

Peony Class will be on alternate Mondays.

Lavender Class will be on alternate Tuesdays.

Poppy Class will be on alternate Thursdays.

The children we need to wear long sleeved tops and trousers/leggings. Children will need to wear weather appropriate footwear. Old trainers would be perfect as the weather has been drier recently. As we move into wetter, colder months wellies will be much more appropriate.

We will send a message on ClassDojo as a reminder on Forest School weeks.

 

Roald Dahl Day

This Monday we will be celebrating Roald Dahl day in school. We are looking forward to seeing the children’s wonderful costumes. Please do bear in mind that the children will have PE on Monday so their costumes and shoes will need to be appropriate for this.

Baby Photos

One of the main themes of our science learning this half term is living and non-living things. In this, we look at how all living things grow and consider how we have all grown up from being a baby. To help us in this work, if you could send in a photograph of your child as a baby this would make their learning more relatable to themselves. Please send this in via Dojo to your child’s class teacher by Friday 18^th September 2026.

Spellings Homework

This week, your child will come home with some spellings to practice at home. Please practice these spellings on the sheet, this does not need to be returned to us.

Reading At Home

Reading regularly at home will make a huge impact on your child's reading development and learning across the whole curriculum. Please read each week as often as you can and jot it down in the reading diary. It is also important to talk about a book when you have finished your reading. Which is your favourite part? Did you like this character? Why? 

We will send home the book that your child has been reading in their Guided Reading sessions during the week. Up to two additional reading books from the colour bands will come home and will be changed weekly if they have been read at home. Please note the reading you are doing at home in your child's reading diary so we can see each week if the children are ready for a new book.

Always remember to have your child's reading books and reading diary in school everyday!

Happy Friday, everybody! 

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog - A new blog post will be posted every Friday containing information about what the children have been up to and what they will be doing in school the following week. It will also detail any reminders or special events coming up, as well as the Maths and English homework that has been set for each year group. Further information on this will follow.

We have had a great first week back. It was so lovely to welcome the children back into school on Wednesday and to hear all of their holiday news!

The children have settled in so well and we are all very proud of how well the children have coped in their new classrooms and with new routines. Thank you so much for joining Dojo. I think you'll agree that it makes communication between parents and teachers so much quicker and easier. Please do not hesitate to use it to contact us if you need to or to send in photos of any special activities or achievements that the children have completed at home. We will also be continuing with 'Wow's' in Key Stage 1. (We know how you all like to use them as bribes from time to time! 😀) These can be in the form of the usual paper copy or via Dojo. 

Reminders

It is important that your child brings with them a water bottle and their reading diary and reading book every day please. The guided reading books are needed for the next group each week, so returning them is very important. 

Ensure that all hats, cardigans, jumpers, coats etc. have the children's names in them! We have already had a number of children losing items and our lost property is mounting up! We would be grateful if you could do a quick check of the uniform this weekend please (including their PE kit). The children are far less likely to lose things that are labelled and it makes our life so much easier! 

**Don't forget that Monday is our PE day, so the children come to school in their school PE kit.**

Forest School dates will be announced next week.

Reading Books

Your child will have brought home coloured reading books this week. This is to supplement extra reading practice alongside their Phonics Guided Reading books which will be coming home next Friday. Please write in your child's reading diary about any reading they have done as regularly as possible. Little and often helps your child's development so much! A quick note or a signature is all we need to see when we check if the children have read at home.

School Council Elections

Next week we will be holding elections in class to choose our class councillor, who will become part of the School Council. If your child wishes to stand they might like to make a poster or prepare a short speech which will help them make their case to the class!

Happy Friday Everybody!

It's been another week of fine weather but also very hot! The children have done so well to continue with their learning in the heat. This week has seen the children visit their new classes and meet their new teachers for September, as well as taking part in our Race for Life 'walk' today. It was lovely to see so many children and staff dedicating their walk to loved ones and people close to them. 

For parents of children in Lavender Class in September, Mrs Grifffiths will be in school on Monday next week and will be happy to meet you after school, so that you can put a face to the name.

Homework

Both year groups have their new Animaphonics books in their bags along with their spelling sheets.

Year 1 Maths homework is pages 37 and 39 of their CGP book. this looks at halves and quarters, which we have been focusing on in lessons this week.

Year 2 Maths homework is a temperature sheet. The children need to look at the scale and read the temperature on each thermometer. 

Beach Visit

On Tuesday we will be taking the children to Bradwell Beach for the day. We are aiming to leave school at approximately 9:15am and are anticipating being back in time for the end of the school day. Please ensure your child has had sun cream applied before school, is in comfortable clothing (appropriate for the beach - shorts and a T-shirt) and has old trainers or beach shoes on. Clothing and shoes are likely to get sandy and muddy, so please do not put them in anything that they will worry about getting spoiled. They can also bring a bucket and spade. Please be mindful that the children will be walking and carrying their own lunch and beach items, so do not send them in with anything too big and heavy. Thank you! We are really looking forward to a fun-filled day learning about our local coastline!

Bluebell, Buttercup and Daffodil Blog Thursday 2nd July 2026

Dear Parents, 

We are publishing the blog early this week, due to Sport's Day taking place tomorrow. Please ensure that you have let the school office know if you cannot make it and your child is having a picnic lunch with another parent. Our lunch time supervisors will also be on hand to supervise any children that are not sitting with a family, so please don't worry if you cannot make it!

A decision will be made by the end of today, as to whether the event will take place all day or just in the morning. This is dependent on the temperatures forecast for tomorrow. We appreciate that this may not be ideal but we want to keep all our children and spectators safe. Thank you for your understanding. 

Homework:

This week the children have their Animaphonics books to read at home as well as their speling sheets.

We have also given them their Comprehension books to complete one page if you have the time.

For Early Comprehension book children, this will be page 6.

For First Comprehension book children, this will be page 14.

Next Tuesday after school is class visits. This is an opportunity for you to meet your child's NEW teacher and to have a look around their new classroom.

Bluebell, Buttercup and Daffodil Blog Friday 26th June 2026

Happy Friday Everybody!

What a strange week it has been. We have tried our best to keep school as normal for the children as possible in this heat, whilst making sure they had plenty of fun too.

We have all been doing our best to keep cool with fans, ice poles, cold drinks and the odd soaking with a bucket of water... Sorry about that!

Thank you all for working with us as we adapted the week and for keeping us informed of your plans. Hopefully a normal school week will resume next week.

Due to the fact that we do not have all the homework books in school this week, there has not been any homework set. We have not exchanged the Animaphonics books this week but we have changed the colour band books. Please read your child's new book with them this weekend. You could even dojo us a photo of them reading in an unusual place (maybe the pool, under a parasol, under a tree etc.)

Don't forget, next Friday is Sports Day! Mr Greenfield has sent a letter out via dojo about the arrangements for this.

We hope you all have a super weekend. Enjoy the glorious weather but remember to stay safe in the sun.

Bluebell, Buttercup and Daffodil Blog 19th June 2026

Happy Friday Everybody!

What a hot one it has been! We have had a great time today sewing our fish under the oak tree and then eating ice creams for our snack. This was all in the name of education of course. Both the Year 1 and Year 2 children have been working on collecting and presenting data this week. They have used tally charts, pictograms and bar charts to show the total number of children that wanted a particular flavour ice cream. It was only fair that they were rewarded for their efforts on such a hot day! We had sprinkles and mini marshamllows too.

Our fish are looking brilliant. 73 children sat and sewed their fish together today and are looking forward to adding detail to them over the next few weeks.

Homework

Both year groups have their spellings in their bags and a data sheet for their Maths homework. The Year 1 children used the top part of their sheet to practise tally charts on Monday, but it would be great if you could take the time for them to explain how a tally chart works. This helps to embed their learning. Thank you!

Happy Friday, everybody! 

We have been learning about holidays in the past this week and have created some excellent timelines and captions to demonstrate our learning! We will continue to learn about the seaside over the next few weeks. We've all had a great day so far celebrating our TTRS day. We had a special assembly and have learned to play the 'C'  chord on the ukulele! Photos will feature in our newsletter.

Book Fair Competitions

To be in with a chance to win a £5 voucher for the Book Fair, we are holding some competitions for you to enter.

There are 5 vouchers up for grabs so 5 competitions are running.

They are:

Competition 1: Everyone - Design a new wand and include a description explaining what it is made from.

Competition 2: EYFS/ KS1 - Design a new front cover for your favourite book.

Competition 3: KS2 -  Design a new front cover for your favourite book.

Competition 4: EYFS/ KS1 - Design a bookmark.

Competition 5: KS2 - The most words read on Accelerated Reader the week before (these will be checked by Miss Harvey in school).

These can be done on paper and given to Miss Harvey or you can even use Google Drive to create your entry digitally. You  can enter more than one competition as long as it is for your phase.

All competition entries to be in by Friday 12th June and the winner will be announced in assembly on Monday 15th June

Winners will receive a £5 voucher for the book fair and everyone who enters will receive 5 Dojos.

The Book fair is running from Monday 15th to Friday 19th June and there is a 3 for 2 offer so please come along to support the school.

**There will be no book fair on Thursday 18th June due to the Father’s Day sale**

The book fair is arriving next week Monday to Thursday and will run straight after school until 3:45. We will have a card machine and no cash will be taken.

Buttercup. Bluebell and Daffodil Blog 5th June 2026

 Happy Friday, everybody! 

Welcome back to our last half term in Year 1 or Year 2!

And what an exciting first week it has been. The children have written some fabulous instructions about how to make a jam sandwich, after learning how important it is to add detail, time connectives and 'bossy verbs'. Then on Friday, we followed our instructions to make our sandwiches and enjoyed eating them.

Next week we will be looking at the history of our seaside and will be creating timelines to show how our visits to the seaside have changed over the years.

Next Friday 12th June is Times Tables Rockstars day. The children can come dressed as a rockstar for a day of fun-filled Maths activities!

Happy half term everybody!

The children have worked really hard this half term and deserve a well-earned break. Let's hope the beautiful weather continues!

After the holiday, we will be continuing with our 'seaside' project and looking forward to our visit to the beach. 

We would like all the children to have a relaxing week off, so we are not sending homework books home this week, but if you can keep up the reading little and often this will have a hugely positive effect on their progress. It would also be good if those children that cannot yet tie their own shoe laces, could learn to do so.

Have a lovely break and for those of you fortunate enough to be going away, have a wonderful holiday.

Hello Everybody!

We have all been very busy this week creating our shape poems and are now learning the story 'A Hole in the Bottom of the Sea'. Our apologies if the children drive you a little crazy this weekend singing the song. We have been learning it to help us to sequence the story, which is also an ocean food chain! We will be adding our own sea creatures to the story next week.

This week the children have been planning their sea creature shape poems in preparation for writing them next week. They have also been multiplying, grouping and sharing in Maths.

The Maths homework this week reflects the learning that has taken place in class. 

Maths Year 1 - CGP book pages 32 and 33 Multiplying

Maths Year 2 - Multiplying in any order sheet. This will help to embed the childrens knowledge of multiplication number sentences and that the multiplication can be written in either order to get the same answer.

Buttercup, Bluebell and Daffodil Blog 17th April 2026

Welcome back everybody!

We hope you all had an enjoyable Easter break and got to enjoy some of the lovely weather that we had.

This term our project is 'At the Seaside'. We will be learning all about life on, under and near the sea. The children have shared their knowledge of the project with us and have discussed what they would like to find out. This will be incorporated into our lesson plans to ensure that their questions are answered. We are hoping to end the term and the school year with a trip to the seaside in July!

We will be setting homework a little differently this term. We will be alternating between reading comprehension and Maths homework, so as not to overload the children. The reading comprehension will be in the form of a booklet where we will set a page to complete each week, the same as we often do with the Maths homework. Reading comprehension is an essential element of understanding and enjoying reading. It goes way beyond decoding words to read them and requires the children to read a piece of text and answer questions about it to check their understanding.

Happy Easter Everybody!

We have had a great half term with your children. They have worked so hard and definitely deserve a break. With that said, there is NO HOMEWORK for this holiday! The children have a new colour band book and their Sumdog logins should they wish to do something at home but it is not expected.

We wish you all a restful break and hope that the copious amounts of chocolate that they consume over Easter is well out of their system by the time that they return to school!😊

Happy Friday Everybody!

We have had a very busy week...

...Science Day was great! We completed lots of fun acitvities, including making our own boats and larva lamps. Then we prepared for Mother's Day and the afternoon tea, as well as completing our own Mother's Day cards. We hope you like them! Next Friday the children can wear red for Comic Relief and/or odd socks for World Down Syndrome Day.

**Please note there is a change of PE day for all chidren in Bluebell, Buttercup and Daffodil Classes**

PE will be on Tuedsay next week instead of Monday

Change of Forest School Day for BUTTERCUP CLASS ONLY! Their session will be on Monday afternoon NOT Tuesday. Apologies for the change. This is due to learning sessions happening in school that cannot be changed.

Bluebell Class can come into school on Tuesday in their Forest School clothing and if it is comfortable can remain in it for their PE session.

The Year 2 children have their spellings in their bags and all of the children have a new Animpahonics book. 

Year 1 children can use the sheet sent home last week to practise for the Phonics Screening check. Please only complete a maximum of half a sheet each week.

Happy Friday Everybody!

The children have been busy writing persuasive letters this week to the family who disturbed Bear from the book 'We're going on a Bear Hunt'. We have discovered that your childrn can be very persuasive!

World Book day was a great success. The children looked fabulous in their costmes adnd we had a lovely time reading with children from other year groups.

Next Thursday it is Science Day in school. You do not have to do anything for this. In school we will be comepleting lots of different Science based activities and investigations. It is set to be a very fun day!

Homework

The Year 2 children have their spellings in their bags and all of the children have a new Animpahonics book. 

Year 1 children can use the sheet sent home last week to practise for the Phonics Screening check. Please only complete a maximum of half a sheet each week.

Welcome back everybody!

We are continuing our project 'The Quest' this half term and will also be learning about the countries that make up the United Kingdom. We be learning about the flags that represent each country, the cities within them and the castles that you can find there. 

On Thursday next week it is World Book Day. Please see the note below from Miss Harvey about this:

This year is The National Year of Reading so we will be celebrating World Book Day for the whole day. 

Please come in wearing a costume to show your favourite book character. If you do not want to dress up, you can bring your favourite book in or a prop to give us a clue.

Homework

The Year 2 children have their spellings in their bags. 

Year 1 children have sheets to practise in preparation for the phonics screening check. They only need to complete a maximum of one half of the sheet each week so one sheet is ta least two weeks homework. Could you please encourage them to:

1. Write the word
2. Add the sound buttons (scanning for digraphs, trigraphs or split digraphs - the chidlren know what these are!)
3. Blend the word
4. Say it

These will be coming home each week. There will be a combination or real and pseudo (alien) words. The children know that an 'alien' word isn't a real one!

Buttercup, Bluebell and Daffodil Blog Friday 13th February 2026

Happy half term everybody! 

What A busy, fun half term it has been. Our trip to Colchester Castle has really made our project come alive for the children and has enthused them to learn more about knights and castles. 

Thank you all for responding so quickly to our request for boxes and tubes to make our castles. These are now completed and should be on their way home to you soon. The children have put a lot of effort into these and should be able to tell you the names of all the different parts.

We will be continuing our project next half term up to the Easter break, when it will change on our return to school to 'At the Seaside'.

Homework

Reading: The children's Animaphonics books have been changed and so have the colour band books. Please continue to read at home regularly. It can make a huge difference to the progress that the children make.

Maths: This week the focus has been on sequencing days/months and time.

Top Marks is a great website to access games in any subject. We use it in school to warm up for or consolidate our learning in Maths. There are some very useful games on there that you may wish to complete with your child at home.

We have been very busy learning about castle defence systems this week and have begun to create our own castles. Thank you all for the box and tube donations!

Next week we will be looking at the life of a knight and how to joust. We will also be trying out jousting for ourselves during our Forest School sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. This will be slightly adapted with us using imaginary horses and pool woggles as jousts! We apologise in advance if the children come home muddy on their Forest School day.

Homework

This week the children have Maths worksheets to complete that have been given to them to put in their bags. These link directly with the learning that has taken place in school this week.

The children's new spelling sheets are also in their bags, along with their new reading books.
