Year 1 & 2 Thursday 14th May

Good morning,

We hope you are all having a lovely week! As we have looked a lot at observational drawings and seaside creations, I thought it might be nice for a slightly different blog today. As the weather is due to be nice at the weekend, whats better than having a walk down the seafront and eating yummy treats! Unfortunately this is not possible at the moment, so I am going to be giving you recipes to make your favourite seaside food and drinks at home.

STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKE

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of milk

  • 4-5 scoops vanilla ice cream

DOUGHNUTS
Makes 18 doughnuts

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 90ml milk
  • 25g butter or baking fat
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 250g sifted plain flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1L oil for deep frying
  • 60g caster sugar or icing sugar for dusting
Method:
  1. Stir the vinegar into the milk; set aside for a few minutes until thick.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla until well blended. Sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt; stir into the sugar mixture alternating with the vinegar and milk.
  3. Roll dough out on a floured surface to about 1cm thickness. Cut into doughnuts using a round cutter. Let stand for about 10 minutes
  4. Heat the oil in a large deep pan to 190 C. Fry doughnuts in the hot oil until golden, turning over once. Drain on kitchen paper. Dust with sugar while they are still warm and serve immediately.

SLUSH PUPPIES

Ingredients:

  • 10-12 ice cubes
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 cup of juice or fizzy
Method:
  1. Place ice cubes and salt in a Ziploc bag.
  2. Place juice in a smaller sandwich-sized Ziploc bag, press out all the air and seal tightly.
  3. Place bag of juice IN the bag of ice and seal.
  4. Shake for about 3-5 minutes or until juice is slushified (I made that word up-- it just seems so fitting)
  5. Pour slush into a cup and serve immediately.

VANILLA ICE CREAM

Children will love this - part recipe, part science experiment, milk transforms into delicious ice cream in front of their eyes.

Ingredients:

  • 300ml semi skimmed milk
  • 1 tablespoon of caster sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1kg ice
  • 6 tablespoon of rock salt
  • hundred and thousands, to serve
You will need:
  • 2 medium zip locked freezer bags
  • 1 large zip-zeal freezer bag
  • sticky tape
Method:
  1. Place the milk, sugar and vanilla into the doubled-up medium zip-seal bags. Close and secure with sticky tape if the seal isn’t strong. Tip the ice and salt into the large bag, then place the smaller bags inside the larger one, and seal well.
  2. You will need to keep the bags moving for 10-15 mins to freeze the milk. Gently throw the bag from hand to hand or take turns shaking it – it’s a good idea to wear gloves to keep your hands warm! Remove the ice-cream bag, open and scoop into bowls. Sprinkle with hundreds & thousands.

CHOCOLATE FRUIT STICKS

Ingredients:

  • selection of fruit of your choice
  • long skewers
  • chocolate
Method:
  1. Chop the fruit in small pieces.
  2. Carefully poke them onto the skewer making a repeated pattern.
  3. Melt chocolate in the microwave and drizzle over fruit.
  4. Put in the fridge until the chocolate has set.
  5. Eat and enjoy!

SEA CREATURE SANDWICHES

Ingredients:

  • Bread
  • butter
  • filling
  • sea creature cutter or knife if you are creative

If you would like to add some writing to today's activity the children could complete a set of instructions explaining how they made their chosen seaside treat.
