Year 1 & 2 - Thursday 2nd April

Good morning everybody!

Just a reminder that as well as here, information and larger versions of any resources are being put on the Key Stage 1 page on our website:

Just scroll down to the bottom of the page for our "Resources for Learning" section.

Phonics & Reading

Please keep up any phonics and reading activities you have been doing as these are really important. With these activities it is not doing something different everyday but repeating and practising key skills known to the children that is important. Reading Robot on Phonics Play is a great example of this:

Once on the home page, enter the username and password that is on the screen (march20, home).

From here, choose the Resources tab and choose Phase 3.

Now scroll down to the bottom and choose Reading Robot.

From here you can choose which words you want to read:

The Year 1 Phonics Check, section 1 and section 2 are, unsurprisingly, suitable for Year 1's, particularly if your child is in Mr Jude's phonics group.

The Phase 5 tab will be a good fit for children in Miss Langley's phonics group.

Children in Mrs Yuille's phonics group can focus on Dates and Numbers tab - can you read and spell these words?

If you choose Enter Words, you can type in your own words for the robot to share.

Spending 10 minutes a day with Reading Robot is beneficial for your child and closely mirrors what we would be doing in class.

As far as reading is concerned, please be mindful in encouraging comprehension skills with the texts that you read. You do not need an Accelerated Reader account to develop your comprehension skills, indeed, Accelerated Reader quizzes do not teach comprehension skills, merely test a narrow type of comprehension knowledge.

Using the prompts below to support discussions around any texts read, be it physical books or those read on Myon are the real key to helping to develop your child's reading comprehension skills:

Vocabulary Quizzes

Another important strand in developing comprehension skills is widening your child's vocabulary. I stumbled upon these vocabulary quizzes on the Cambridge Dictionary website:

Choose a theme that your child is interested in and then choose a challenge level - level 4 is tricky!

Plant Spotter Sheet

Whilst on your daily exercise, we have looked at birds you might spot and other scavenger hunt ideas. Today, keep an eye out for any plants you might spot, whether in the park or when passing other people's gardens. An understanding of the world around us is an essential life skill and promotes a positive attitude towards looking after our planet.

Stay safe - see you all on the other side!
