Year 1 & 2 - Wednesday 3rd June

Welcome to Wednesday's blog - we will wrap up our week of GPS activities and start a new block of learning about the seaside in history as we learn about holidays in Victorian times.

English - Contractions

A contraction is where we take 2 words and squash them together to make 1 word:

I am = I'm

Few things to note here. Firstly, we lose some letters; in this instance the a has vanished. Where letters go missing an apostrophe is placed (we call this an apostrophe of omission). Sometimes it can be more than 1 letter that is omitted.

Secondly, there is a small space between the letters either side of the apostrophe. Try not to end up with something like Iḿ. There are 2 tasks below, I think the first one is a little easier than the second one - you only need to choose one, be led by your child; do they fancy a challenge this fine Wednesday?!

Write it out as I did above with I'm and use the word bank below to help. Although these resources are on the class page too, writing both forms out is more helpful.

History - Holidays Long Ago

Last half term, we spent time thinking about the geographical features of the seaside, both human and physical features, and the animals that call the coastline home. So now we will be looking at holidays in the past - in particular the Victorian period.

Before we go into this, a note on history teaching in KS1. We build up historical understanding over 2 years, in particular in this Victorian period. We look at Victorian times in almost all of our termly projects. In our project "Knock Knock! Who's There?" we look at how homes and houses have changed over the last 10000 years. This helps us have a loose time line of periods in human history:

Stone Age
Bronze Age
Iron Age
Middle Ages
Tudor Period
Georgian Period
Victorian Period
Present Day

Now, there are gaps here, obviously, but we discuss these ideas so we can help "hang" events in a context. We can explain that cars were invented at the end of the Victorian times or castles were not built extensively after the Tudor period.

TASK - Look at the 2 pictures below, one of a present day holiday, one of a Victorian holiday. Discuss or make a list of all the things that are different between the pictures. Also consider what is the same about the pictures. Often in history the intentions and outcomes are the same, just the way these are achieved are different.

I hope you have a wonderful day.
